Subject: [MDBirding] C&O count - call for coverage of "Orphan miles"
Count dates for 2020: 1/25/20 thru 2/2/20

2020 will mark the 3rd year of the count's rebirth following the end of DC
Audubon Society's [DCAS] sponsorship of the count in 2016.

Every year there are far flung areas in Washington & Allegany counties that
lack coverage, thus "orphan miles." In *2016 DCAS was unable to cover 22
miles in Washington and 5 miles in Allegany county. In 2019 with the
renewed count still in its infancy the gaps were 34 miles in Washington and
23 miles in Allegany county. Some of the individuals who had volunteered
to assist in these areas in 2016 included Mike Englar, Hans Holbrook,
[first name unknown] Epperly, June Tveekrem, Mary Huebner, Vern Gauthier,
and Mark Malec. I have no contact info for most of them, but they would be
welcome back as would anyone else reading this with an interest in birding
the C&O canal towpath in winter.

The C&O Canal Trust has developed an excellent interactive Access and
Parking link for the entire towpath: [
https://www.canaltrust.org/plan/parking-along-the-co-canal-3/]. Use it to
determine ease of access to any area of the towpath.

The miles in question can be found on the JPG attachment. Also note there
the requested method for inquiring about/reserving towpath segments. Much
more information will be provided to those interested.

*2016's count was encumbered with an historic blizzard on the day of the
count and many areas were never able to be surveyed. In part this was what
led to the expansion of the count period to the current 9 day window.
Other changes were also implemented with the goal of improving the data.
