- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60743811
- Media: 5 Photos
- Comments: "Apparent first winter bird floating in the Columbia. Spotted
at quite some distance. Smaller than a nearby Mew Gull. Blackish hooded
appearance. In the lighting, the mantle didn't look particularly on the
darker spectrum of medium gray, but still did appear relatively darker than
the mantle of a nearby Mew Gull. Originally believed this may have been a
Bonaparte's Gull. However, the extent of the darkish hood and mantle
coloration eliminated that species. Furthermore, in flight, the upperwing
pattern was all wrong for a Bonaparte's Gull. The outer primaries were
extensively blackish, including the leading edge, and appeared to be
lacking white apical spots."

esp reddish upper tail/rump. NO deep brownish wash on flanks under streaks,
rules out Sooty. Definite but blurry central spot. Streaking of breast
brownish, not blackish. Faint faint wingbars , barely at all. Faint “but
distinct” eye ring. Bill yellowish bottom half and gray above: “upper
mandible bicolored itself”. Courtney leaning to Thick-billed, as cant see
how this bird any different from our typical Central Oregon type. But Matt
points out that our Oregon Thick-billeds look so much like Slate-colored,
may not be visually distinctive in field? Bird silent. Would appreciate any
reviewer feedback. All Fox Sparrows come up Rare on this county list,
though any subspecies besides Sooty is even rarer and must be typed in."
