Observation start time: 07:45:00 Observation end time: 12:00:00 Total observation time: 4.25 hours
Official Counter: Brenda Tekin
Visitors: Bill Lipcsey, Adriene Beckett-Ansa doing an assignment for her VCU Environmental Science & Biology class.
Weather: Upon arrival it was at least 90% cloud cover and 44 degrees Fahrenheit. There was a dampness in the air making it feel colder. The light SE to NE wind didn't help. Increasing sunshine had been in the forecast which did not materialize. In fact, it was 100% cloud cover by top of 9 o'clock hour (EST).
Raptor Observations: An extremely slow morning with only 5 birds. First bird, a Broad-wing at 8:23, flew in low, gaining little altitude as it came across the gap directly overhead over the parking lot. No birds during last 1-1/2 hours.
Non-raptor Observations: An amazing flight of Norther Flickers, some coming over in groups of 5-11 at a time! Total of 182 counted. Chimney Swift - only one. Blue Jay (8), Tree Swallow (flock of 78). Not one butterfly seen on this gray, chilly morning.
Predictions: Chance of rain. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Brenda Tekin (<brenda...>) Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.rockfishgaphawkwatch.org
