Greater White-fronted Goose (Tule) (Anser albifrons elgasi) (1)
- Reported Sep 17, 2019 17:50 by Stuart Johnston
- Water's Edge, The Dalles, Wasco, Oregon
- Map:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=45.6061359,-121.1401334&ll=45.6061359,-121.1401334
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S59893478
- Comments: "two adult Greater White-fronted Geese were spotted swimming
north just below the west side of the Hwy 197 bridge. They went ashore on a
rocky islet where some preening took place. One was conspicuously larger
than the other and overall was darker brown; this dark brown was especially
noticeable on the head and neck. The smaller goose had a paler, greyer head
and neck. The large goose's bill was bigger, proportionately, and was
pinkish-orange. Both had bright orange legs and feet. And both had white
"fronts", blackish splotches on white bellies. They were not associating
with Canada Geese, but at 1818, they were seen flying downriver behind a
small, calling flock of Canadas. Again, the size difference was very
obvious. The larger one looked like a Tule Goose."

I don't think they are diagnostic. "

Hutton's Vireo (Vireo huttoni) (1)
- Reported Sep 12, 2019 07:07 by Caleb Centanni
- Malheur NWR--Headquarters, Harney, Oregon

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S59893160
- Comments: "(Rare): cont. rarity from last week,
nice refind by Courtney this morning 8:05am in pondos by parking lot where
is a sunflower seed feeder, just upslope and closer to parking lot from
Lily Iron’s memorial bench ,
and also seen again here but nearer to SW orange gate :
seen well by both of us, seen many times, also heard do upward repeated
“dweee!” song calls . Bird all over grayish with paler than usual face and
around eye and plumage, maybe different subspecies type ? White wing bar
without black behind it, not a GCKI. No yellowish, not a CAVI.
Afterwards, reseen (or at least, heard) by Cory Gregory’s tour group and
others.

Update: Cory said that no he didn’t actually hear or see the HUVI — that
was a rumor spread by another birder to me. Also, he informed me that he
also heard the “dwee” singing, but he suspects it was a birder playing a
tape for the HUVI.

So maybe Courtney didn’t hear it today after all. We did however see bird
well, Caleb and I, and its pale washed out plumage appearance matches the
photos others have taken of it this week, indicating likely it is a
different subspecies than our typical OR variety.

PS. Later this morning, Cory found and photoed another HUVI down at Page
Springs showing olive coloring more typical for ours."

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S59908328
- Comments: "Seen near post number 18 where one has been seen numerous
times previously. Saw gray bird with large white wing patches and white
near-outer retrices. This bird has an upper breast with some streaking on
upper breast. Viewing was brief, so age is in question. In question because
it has been speculated that breeding has taken place in previous years as a
similar plumage bird has been seen, and presumed to be an immature. More
observations of this bird needed to determine age."
