The 4 letter scheme is not too confusing. It is TYPICALLY the first letters
of the full name.
If a one-word-name then the first 4 letters: Ruff is RUFF
If a two-word-name then the first 2 letters of each word: Black
Oystercatcher=BLOY
If a three-word-name then first letter, first letter, first 2 letters:
Olive-sided Flycatcher=OSFL
And when there would be duplicates then a specific code is assigned:
Herring Gull and Heermanns Gull become HEGU and HEEG

I have never been comfortable with, and certainly not conversant in, the
four-letter abbreviation scheme for birds.
Is the bird being discussed here a Ruff or a RUFF?
Thanks,
