defined wing bars and a ragged crest on head. No wing patches in flight.
Appears to be a juvenile or female. A forked tail probably age related. A
soft rising whistle like call as it fed on elderberries and flew back and
forth across the spring fed slough from Malheur NWR to BLM Campsite side.
Views from the last camp site along the slough looking downstream on the
left side most of the time and from a mowed area with no camping sign.
Birding with Russ Morgan, 10 am. Many other birders were attracted to us
with our camera lenses pointed upwards and enjoyed the view as we observed
the birds behavior for an hour."

Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius) (1)
- Reported Sep 07, 2019 11:00 by Caleb Centanni
- OR—Curry co.—Brookings--S Bank Chetco River Rd (42.0877,-124.1932) OROR
Life Bird for Caleb and Courtney, Curry, Oregon

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S59629873
- Comments: "(Rare): “Unreported”: surprise unexpected Life Bird for both
of us! nice find by Us!! seen in bins and scope for 5-min. solid , see
Caleb’s OBOL post description below.

— as we drove slowly past this stretch of riparian along Chetco River ,
Caleb heard a call note and said “I need to see that warbler!” , which we
never did figure out, because instead of getting onto that warbler,

Caleb saw a flash of yellow atop another bush and said, “What is that
warbler?” & Courtney looked and quick view asked, “Maybe blackpoll type?”
bc of being yellow warbler with 2 white wing bars. Caleb: “no, not
blackpoll type ...”
— took us a while, half minute for Caleb, longer for Courtney, to figure
out it wasn’t a warbler : for sure an Oriole in scope. Size (small, maybe
chat size?) (Yes good note! Sibley says OROR is actually 0.25-in. smaller
than chat) and shape and behavior much more warbler like than oriole,
flitting around in shrub blackberries. Yellowish bird, very bright-ish
yellow, throat as yellow as Yellow Warbler, and most of bird also YEWA
colored, with 2 conspicuous thin bright white wing bars. Tail flaring and
sometimes flashing upright like redstart tail maybe, like mix of flashy
warbler and wren, nice almost lacy-ish when spreading it, slightly longer
in center of tail, giving it a nice rounded semi/almost-lacy appearance.
Yellow utc. Tail quite yellowish but did have slightly darker yellow color
to end of tail. Not long tail. The darker color ending proportion length in
comparison to utc length looks to Courtney like good for sibley’s drawing
of Orchard. Belly color slightly paler yellow than the yellow of upper
breast, but definitely still yellow, not white or grayish. Poss some hint
of grayish on flanks of bird but very subtle if at all, only wondered “ARE
flanks grayish??” aloud couple times, but couldn’t verify, nothing leaping
out. Bill smallish, which is also prob why took Courtney longer to agree to
oriole vs. warbler. Sibley says Orchard OR is “smaller than other orioles
and sometimes mistaken for a warbler” which fits with what we saw, so well!
Caleb noted through scope slightly downward bill. Bill was too small for
Courtney to pick up on that mark through scope. (Bill size “small” for an
oriole, but would be large for a warbler.)
Note: Caleb and I spent a week in San Diego in August surrounded by Hooded
Orioles, good practice experience of them, and this did not look like HOOR
to us.

Caleb: “RBA Curry ORCHARD ORIOLE
Courtney Kelly Jett and I just had a female/juvenile-type, east Bank of the
Chetco River from S Bank Chetco River Rd. Almost exactly at the Chetco
River hotspot. Moving through blackberries for 5 mins, then flying
downriver. 11:00 exactly.
Distinguished from Hooded and Bullock's by bright yellow all across
underside, yellow on back.
, bright white edging in wings, bright, defined wingbars, warbler-like bill
and tail proportions. Looked notably different from the Hoodeds we recently
saw in California. No photos and didn't vocalize, sadly.“"
