The last two or three mornings I have heard them as well—but very briefly, and have not been able to see them.

That could be - usually it is about the food, right? I had a Red-breasted at the parking spot at the end of Mesa Grande Road in Aptos yesterday. It was in a maple, but flew across the street into a vine and then into Nisene Marks. I love the little honkers! Aren't irruptions fun? I have never seen such a dramatic one as the Varied Thrushes a few years back.

Perhaps a food shortage in the mountains is bringing these nuthatches down to the coast? Any ideas?

Another here at my deck this am. My daily coffee and birds produce all the usual suspects, standard warblers etc. Hummingbirds have begun to hit our feeders pretty hard, but nothing unusual. The season is changing for sure.
Near Scotts Valley off of Jarvis Rd at about 1100 feet.
