May 6th: Harris and White-crowned sparrows, Ruby-throated hummingbird male, a one-day Red-breasted nuthatch, Eastern Towhee, a single persistent Red-winged blackbird, Baltimore orioles, Rose-breasted grosbeaks, male Brown-headed cowbird -- under and on a black sunflower feeder and sugar water feeder. 5 miles south of Ames in Story county. The usual doves and woodpeckers. May 8th there was a bobbing Northern Waterthrush pecking in the mud in front of the house in a yet unseeded landscaping project. Plus 6+ of the neighbor's Muscovy ducks. The Screech owl return that I had waited for perhaps 25 years to return was apparently killed by the frequently seen mink -- there was mink scat in the Wood duck box with the remains of the owl. The WD box is on a post assembled in a tee-fashion with about 4 feet of sheet metal wrap -- the mink apparently got through the gap made by the 2x6 tee -- the gap has been filled. Wood ducks are using 3 boxes that I can see from over my desk.
