This past Thursday morning, a friend who lives in Charles Village had an American Bittern fly out of her backyard nandina and perch on her fence. They were face to face for a moment, but when she asked if she could take its picture, it croaked and flew away.
Note that this same friend had a Common Nighthawk, which she was able to photograph, on her porch railing in September 2016. She isn’t able to get out much and really appreciates these special birds coming to her yard!
