Subject: [ia-bird] Displaying Snipe, Johnson Co.
Last night after sunset at least one Wilson's Snipe was performing its
winnowing flight display at Williams Prairie in Johnson County. (The eerie
winnowing sound is made by air rushing through the outer two tail feathers
as the bird dives.) It displayed continuously for over 20 minutes, and at
times it sounded like it flew right over us, but we never spotted it.
Several other snipe were present as evidenced by their rasping 'scaip'
calls.
