Subject: [birders] Get recorders ready

This might be a good time to get your audio recording “apps” ready on your smart phones and leave your windows unlocked for quick response. With migrants coming through, it was barely light here this morning when an odd call actually woke me up. It was something I’m not familiar with but it was fairly high-pitched and had the pace and rhythm of a Flicker’s call. Much higher pitch. Very reminiscent of “Weeka-Weeka-Weeka”. It did that three three times maybe five seconds apart and then did a four-note version. As I struggled out of the fog of sleep, it had already moved into an adjoining parcel where it kept calling but was much quieter. I guess it Could have been a young Cardinal working on his first-year territorial calls but...having an audio record would have sure been fun to send to the group here for ID. It was very emphatic and made me think the birds are thinking they are all behind schedule. Frisky Mallards on the River, Mute Swans driving away a Tundra Swan at Metro Beach and Canada Geese perched on the roof of the neighbor’s collapsing boat well. The last ice on the river disappeared this morning. Now I’m waiting for the Wood Ducks again! P.S. did anyone else send off for their Izzac Walton testing kit? I received four test strips and have been sampling the River here. Sample 1 was 221 ppm, sample 2 was 296 ppm and the day before yesterday I got 197 ppm of chloride. Today I’m contacting the CRWC, MDNR and MDEQ. I’m not aware of any public agency tasked with measuring and reporting area stream, creeks, river salt concentrations.

A buddy sent me a text with a rattle call of an Eastern Meadowlark yesterday in Battle Creek. They haven’t hit my property yet in Barry County but with today’s weather I expect them and others today or very soon. Our Killdeers have been back for a few days now too.

Does anyone see Meadowlarks coming through? We saw three in the yard about 20 years ago for a few minutes and never again. I don’t hear reports of them from those on the list either.

I, then, heard the first one this spring out at the barn in Ann Arbor.
Can it really be that spring is on the horizon?

I heard one last night Faye around midnight from up in the sky close here to the house. Not thinking Killdeer are perching birds, I can only assume it was passing through or maybe circling the area. It was great to hear.

Heard my first killdeer this morning as I was feeding the birds just at sunrise. Heard it twice. Heard it just now too and it reminded me about this morning.

And had a grackle at our feeder yesterday. First ones of each bird for me this year. So glad to see and hear them. It really does make my heart stir.
