This afternoon I saw an immature Cooper's Hawk on the ground in our back yard in northern Allegheny County. On closer inspection I saw that it was plucking a Mourning Dove. At a distance of about 50 feet I watched for 45 minutes as the hawk plucked and ate the dove. Towards the end I could see how the hawk's crop was distended after the large meal. Finally the hawk flew off with what was left of the dove. It was a fascinating nature observation from the warmth of our kitchen.
