VA-Birders,Thirteen birders went on the Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Burke Lake today. We enjoyed the relatively warm, calm morning and tallied 37 species. Thanks to Sumner Askin, the park naturalist, there are now an array of bird feeders near the flagpole in front of the building just to the right at the park entrance, so we spent some time there with the many female Purple Finches, and about 10 other passerine species. There, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker gave great views, and then an American Kestrel flew over and snatched a small bird from high in a nearby tree. On the lake there were distant Ring-necked Ducks and Common Mergansers, but the most enjoyable were the nearby waterfowl which included 3 female Hooded Mergansers, a female Bufflehead, and 2 female Common Goldeneye that appeared during the short sunny period. Complete list follows.

Burke Lake Park, Fairfax, Virginia, US

Protocol: Traveling
2.541 mile(s)
Comments:    Started from the traditional spot past the mini-golf next to the bldg w/ restrooms next to the carousel, walked to the office at the entrance where the park naturalist, Sumner, now stocks feeders! Then we walked to the end of the pier at the marina, and along shore upstream to where the creek feeds the lake, then back to pkg via road. Calm and about 45 degrees at start, then the clouds broke up and we had a short sunny period before the wind picked up and it turned cooler.
