Everyone knows lots about John James Audubon. But what about Rex Brasher? Here are his hand-colored illustrations of 14 Horned Lark subspecies, completed about 1930, for Birds & Trees of North America, his opus multivolume book, 1200 (sub)species, hand produced (literally) starting in about 1900. I wonder if anyone, even Peterson or Sibley, can match that for North American birds or ever will. The numbers refer to the AOU checklist of the time.
