Everyone knows lots about John James Audubon. But what about Rex Brasher?
Here are his hand-colored illustrations of 14 Horned Lark subspecies,
completed about 1930,
for Birds & Trees of North America, his opus multivolume book, 1200
(sub)species, hand produced (literally) starting in about 1900.
I wonder if anyone, even Peterson or Sibley, can match that for North
American birds or ever will. The numbers refer to the AOU checklist of the
time.

For his fascinating and amazing story read the book "Rex Brasher, Painter
of Birds" written by his nephew.
Rex never married; one can guess why.
