Participants still needed for Dec. 15 Santa Cruz Christmas Bird Count

*The 62nd Annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) for Santa Cruz County will be
held on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Counters are still very much
welcome. *

The count (*) is still looking for birders in four sections that are
comfortable with their terrestrial bird identification. These sections are
section 9 (Davenport association), section 11 (Wilder Inland association),
section 6 (Scotts Valley association) and section 5 (DeLaveaga/ Happy
Valley association). The count is currently at 70 counters and is looking
to add another six good birders and six intermediate birders. Last year,
the count had 92 observers in the field, for a total of almost 301 total
party hours, obtaining 174 species on count day and 182 species during
count week. Over 31 thousands individual birds counted.

Diversity and abundances remain the focus of the count, but there is
always the excitement of a possible vagrant.

The SCBC sent a letter to the Seaside City Council in support of the
Monterey Audubon Society’s request to launch a floating nesting island for
Heermann’s gulls in Roberts Lake.
The Seaside City Council approved this request at their Nov. 15th
meeting. *Here's
to a bright future for Heermann’s gulls!*
