A cautionary note. The Snow Bunting, its sibling species McKay's, and the
related McCown's Longspur(not a "true "longspur it turns out)have longer
body feathers at the beginning of fall, many with white tips. These wear
off throughout the winter. A Snow Bunting generated a lot of interest a few
years ago at Ridgefield, where it occupied the same square foot of gravel
for days. It had a very white back but close examination showed it was
going to end up looking like other Snow Buntings after a month or so more
