I spent much of today birding coastal Lane County with Diane Pettey. Our best finds were both continuing birds, the LONG-tailed Duck at Klootchman wayside (buried in a loose assemblage of about 800 Surf Scoters) and the SCRUB Jay that has been hanging out around the Port of Florence campground and adjacent neighborhoods. Other observers report that one PALM Warbler continues at the easternmost end of the port complex.
Other highlights were:
a NORTHERN Shrike on the s jetty road, way up the hill near the pay station just before the road enters the trees.
Large numbers of RED-necked Grebes on the ocean. There were 12 visible at once at Bob Creek, which is quite a lot for that location, and they were very obvious at other sites.
We saw no Harlequin Ducks or Black Scoters at either Klootchman or Bob Creek, the best sites in the county for those species. We did not check Strawberry Hill, just north of Bob Creek, which sometimes has Harlequins.
