Subject: [MASSBIRD] Cape Ann (King Eider, Razorbills, RED-EYED VIREO, etc.)
Jane and I led our annual November trip today for the Joppa Flats
Education Center of Massachusetts Audubon.  12 birders joined us,
visiting in order Gloucester Harbor, Jodrey Fish Pier, Halibut Point
State Park, Granite Pier, Bass Rocks (Elk's Club), Eastern Point, and
Niles Pond.  Mostly to partly cloudy.  West winds 15-20 knots with high
seas from storm of previous day.  Temp in mid to upper 40's.

Canada Goose
Gadwall  4     Small group at Eastern Point parking lot.
American Black Duck
Ring-necked Duck  3     Niles Pond.
Greater Scaup  1     Female on Niles Pond.
KING EIDER  1     Perennial adult male from Elk's Club.  Extremely
distant bird picked out by Linda Hunnewell. As usual, out toward Salt
Island with other eiders.
Common Eider
Harlequin Duck     Great numbers and views from Halbut Point, Granite
Pier, and Bass Rocks.
Surf Scoter     Only a few.
White-winged Scoter     Only about a dozen.
Black Scoter     A few hundred.  By far, the most numerous scoter.
Long-tailed Duck  2     Remarkably only 2.
Common Goldeneye  0     None yet.
Hooded Merganser  4     Niles Pond.
Red-breasted Merganser
Pied-billed Grebe  1     One on Niles Pond.
Red-necked Grebe  2
Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon)
Mourning Dove
Purple Sandpiper     Small flocks at Halibut Point and Bass Rocks.
Greater Yellowlegs  1     Flyover seen by leaders only at Jodrey Fish Pier.
RAZORBILL     Perhaps 15 total.  Several close views of juveniles at
Jodrey Fish Pier, Granite Pier and Bass Rocks.  More distant flybys at
Halibut Point.
Black Guillemot  1     Only a single bird off Bass Rocks.
Ring-billed Gull     Just a couple.
Herring Gull
ICELAND GULL  1     One juvenile picked out by Jane at Granite Pier.
Great Black-backed Gull
Red-throated Loon     Mostly distant birds, but perhaps a couple of dozen.
Common Loon     Only a few on the water from a couple of locations.
Northern Gannet     Some nice close flybys at Granite Pier including a
juvenile and an adult.
Great Cormorant  1     Only one.  Good views of adult perched on rock at
Bass Rocks.
Double-crested Cormorant     Several from Jodrey Fish Pier.
Great Blue Heron  2     Two on Niles Pond.
Northern Harrier  1     Nice views of hunting juvenile at Eastern Point.
Accipiter sp.  1
Red-bellied Woodpecker  1     Halibut Point.
Downy Woodpecker  1     Halibut Point.
RED-EYED VIREO  1     Well seen bird opposite parking lot area near
trail head at Halibut Point State Park. Watched for several minutes off
and on in good lighting and seen by just about everyone in group.  Small
olive green bill, slightly larger than warblers with heavy vireo bill. 
Obvious black eye stripe.  No doubt the same bird that had been
previously been seen here on November 12. A new personal late date for
me in New England.

Purple Finch  1     One flyover at Halibut Point.
American Goldfinch
CHIPPING SPARROW  3     Foraging together on lawn area at Halibut Point
with group of Juncos and a couple of Song Sparrows.  Well seen. 
Smallish sparrows with clear breasts and dark line passing through eye. 
One with obvious rufous cap.
Dark-eyed Junco     Small group on lawn at Halibut Point State Park.
White-throated Sparrow     Several at Halibut Point State Park.

ORANGE-CROWNED SPARROW  1     Brief views by leader only at Halibut
Point State Park in vicinity of REVI.
Yellow-rumped Warbler  1     At least one at Halibut Point.
