Yesterday afternoon, I saw 8 N. Shovelers following the Ouachita R. about 2 miles downstream of Remmel Dam. When they saw me they made a 180. This is my first sighting of this species along the river.

Subject: Thousands!

At Wapanocca Wildlife Refuge yesterday late afternoon there were thousands and thousands of ducks upon the lake, splashing and carrying on as if in the middle of a northern summer.

Hundreds of Redwing Blackbirds flew about and sang as if the first days of spring.

The sunlight angle made it very difficult to ID most of the ducks but I did manage Northern Shovelers and Mallards among them.

Other highlights :

150+ American Coots

3 Great White Egrets

6 Great Blue Herons

1 Northern Harrier

2 Red Tailed Hawks

lots of small dark sparrows that were too fast

Just being there made it a great day to be among the living.
