A rather unprecedented event today at the Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch in NY's Catskill Mountains--passage of 128 Golden Eagles from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Standard Time. Counters were Pete Fauth and Becky Gretton, with numerous spotters and others present. The great majority of the birds were adults. Weather was overcast and cold with generally light winds from the NW.
The previous single day high for Golden Eagles at Franklin Mt. was 71 on 11/11/2015. This appears to be a record single day count for the species in eastern North America.
This follows a count of 24 GEs yesterday and 41 on 10/21, bringing the site total to 219 for October and for the season. This is by far the highest single month Golden total at the site, which usually peaks for this species in mid-November.
No known explanation for this early and concentrated movement.
