I spent the warm morning birding around this south Columbus Park, finding a steady trickle of migrants. I stopped at Heron Pond, Elk Run, the Confluence area, and the Alum Creek Bikepath up to the borrow pits. Water levels, unsurprisingly, were high, so waterbirds were scarce, but landbirds were in decent numbers. Notables included:
Vultures - 55+ Turkey Vultures and 1 Black Vulture were scattered between 2 roosts - one at Heron Pond, another at the Confluence area BaldEagle - 1 juvenile was flying down Big Walnut Creek at Elk Run Park Yellowlegs - yes I had 1 shorebird other than a Killdeer - a Greater Yellowlegs at Heron Pond Woodpeckers - still many Flickers and Sapsuckers passing through - had them at multiple sites BrownCreepers - one was singing along the Confluence Trail near the borrow pits Flycatchers - not a one Swallows - none here, but had a few Rough-wings on the drive home Vireos - Blue-headed at several spots Kinglets - Ruby-cronws in many spots, but only 1 pair of Golden-crowns (near the Borrow Pits) Thrushes - 1 Swainsons at the Confluence area Mimids - had single Catbirds at 2 areas Warblers - best was an Orange-crowned along the bike path north of Heron Pond, but also had Nashvilles, Tennessees, Magnolias, Black-thr.Greens, Black-thr.Blue (female at the Confluence area), Bay-breasted, Yellow-rumped, and ComYellowthroat Buntings,grosbeaks - 4 Indigo Buntings were in the weedfield at Elk Run Park; another was singing (!) at Heron Pond Sparrows - small Chipping or White-throated Sparrow flocks were at several areas; a Lincoln's Sparrow was in the weefield at Elk Run Park Blackbirds - small groups of redwings and grackles were at many areas
