This has been reported on in the media (at least in the Times-Picayune). They're not talking about a full-scale "airport" with commercial service, but an airstrip with fuel pumps, a hangar, and perhaps a small terminal building. In fact, the airstrip already exists, but has been unused for a few decades and is overgrown. This isn't to endorse the idea (or to criticize it) but to explain what the plans actually entail.

I just heard on NPR that Grand Isle mayor wants to build an airport on Elmer's Island. Has anyone else heard about this? They said Wildlife and Fisheries has ok'd the idea.
