Subject: [LABIRD-L] moonwatching
The next few days represent an ideal time to monitor migration by counting
birds crossing in front of the moon. The same will be true a (lunar) month
from now. Unfortunately we need a wind shift in order to get things
going. Patience is required, however, a single bird per minute is evidence
of a big movement, so you might see one in 10 minutes as things are
tonight. Counts can be converted to some quantitative measure of migration
such as birds per mile of front per hour, and can actually be compared to
radar reflectivity in dBz.
