A “Big As Texas eBird Counties” spreadsheet update before the fall migrants
really kick in. This update revealed the issues with eBird’s choice to
split the Mexican Duck from the Mallard. Originally there were only 3
counties needed for Mallard. Now there are 30. In these 27 counties Mallard
records were automatically shifted to Mallard/Mexican Duck statis. Blanco,
Brooks, Brown, Concho, Crane, Crockett, Edwards, Gillespie, Guadalupe,
Irion, Karnes, Kerr, Llano, Mason, Maverick, McCulloch, Medina, Menard,
Mills, Reagan, Real, San Saba, Sutton, Wilson, Winkler, Zapata, Zavala. I
assume it’s up to users to update their validated checklists to “fix” these
records. That is if full Mallard species, were encountered.
Again this spreadsheet is only a representation of eBird public records. If
you have species in counties that aren’t represented here, then the
checklists they are on are not validated. Possibly due to county-wide lists
which are automatically invalidated, or rare species that didn’t pass the
review process due to lack of documentation.
If you have a google account, this checklist can be saved to your
docs.google.com. This document will be used for future updates. The 4th row
of each county column will show the last update for that county. The 2nd
tab shows species that needs 1 - 5 counties to be seen in all 254. Greater
Roadrunner was added as now 5 counties more are needed. I left the Mallard
on there with the above mentioned counties in white. The 3rd tab shows
county rankings and leaders. Texas Century Club page has been updated as
well. (yeah I rank just about everything).
