Nine people walked the Sierra Vista EOP dikes this sunny morning. Our group
tally was 52 species, right on target for summer birding here.
Top bird was a Willet at the Moson Road impoundments, the first fall
southbound shorebird migrant. Also of interest was a jump in Yellow-headed
Blackbirds from two birds last week to several small groups totaling three
dozen birds today.
A Green Heron was seen to catch a dragonfly for its mid-morning snack at
the edge of the cattails. Early birders had Great Horned Owls, Lesser
Nighthawks, and Com. Poorwills along Moson Road as the sky began to
Botteri's Sparrow, Black-throated Sparrow, and Song Sparrow all continue to
sing early in the morning. The EOP has very little in the way of flowering
plants, but this morning both Black-chinned and Anna's Hummingbirds were
hawking for insects around blooming sweet acacia shrubs.
