Subject: [CT Birds] Winter holdovers Cockenoe island

Late in the day, Brendan and I took a kayak trip from Calf Pasture beach, Norwalk, to Cockenoe Island in Westport. There were some unexpected birds still lingering about... still good numbers of Brant, but more notable were 3 or 4 Purple sandpipers on the rocky islet near Calf pasture Island, a Bonaparte's Gull on the tern-nesting sandspit, and three Common Loons, two males in breeding plumage (and calling). Some of the expected birds were loads of Black-crowned Night herons, a few Yellow-crowns, and four Little Blue herons, as well as Black-bellied Plovers, SB Dowitchers, Turnstones and Dunlin.
