Massbirders,

This notice is to inform you that Mass Audubon's annual fund raising Bird-a-thon will begin this evening at 6 p.m. and will end at 6 p.m. tomorrow evening. Always an enjoyable event, the Bird-a-thon is Mass Audubon's most important fund raising event of the year. Over 800 people are officially headed out to contribute species to their various birding teams, along with countless Bird-a-thon Boosters and friends who will be birding just for fun. And this year more than 260 people are fundraising for Mass Audubon online, which is definitely the MOST EVER. So we're right on the cusp of what could be a record-breaking fund raising effort!

For those unfamiliar with how the Bird-a-thon works, basically it's an event where birders seek financial sponsorship for the number of different bird species they are able to locate within the 24-hour Bird-a-thon period. Most birders bird for specific Mass Audubon sanctuaries or programs and try to raise money for the sanctuary or program of their choice. Last year the Bird-a-thon successfully raised over $230,000, so clearly this is an important fund raising effort.

Although it's too late to join an official Bird-a-thon team at this point, it's not too late to go birding on your own and raise money for the sanctuary or program of your choice. Fund raising for the Bird-a-thon is possible through June 15. For more information about the event, please visit http://web.massaudubon.org/site/TR?fr_id=1070&pg=entry And to all of you who are already planning to participate, thank you one and all for your willingness to support the bird and other conservation work that Mass Audubon has been doing so successfully since 1896!
