Tomorrow Night!

The Adirondack Archipelago:

Bird Evolution at the Edge of the Boreal Forest

presented by Dr. Jeremy Kirchman

Curator of Birds at the NYS Museum

In conjunction with our special 3-week exhibition of the 2017 National Audubon Society Photography Awards at the Union College Kelly Adirondack Center...

Audubon Society of the Capital Region is co-hosting this special free and open to the public program with Southern Adirondack Audubon Society, tonight on the Union College campus at the Old Chapel located at the end of Liberty Lane, in Schenectady, NY.

Program Description:

The great swath of spruce-fir forest that stretches from Alaska to the Canadian Maritimes reaches its southern limit in the mountains of New York. Here you find the southern outpost for the Boreal Chickadee, Bicknell’s Thrush, and other boreal forest specialists, their populations isolated as if on an archipelago of islands that rise above a sea of temperate deciduous forest. The evolution of these bird populations is the focus of research led by Dr. Jeremy Kirchman, Curator of Birds at the New York State Museum. In this talk, Kirchman will describe his work catching and sampling birds in the field and sequencing their genes in the DNA lab, examining the geographic patterns of genetic diversity in the boreal forest archipelagos of northeastern North America.

NOTE: Prior to the 7:00pm program there will be a free and open to the public speaker's reception at the
