Steve Mayo tried to post a link that explains the banding codes so that those who are wondering what all the fuss is about would at least be able to make sense of it. However Steve's message was not formatted to work on this old-fashioned text-only CTBirds list so it never reached you.

That includes the rules (more complex that Arthur's summary) but also a list of the actual species and their codes. That list includes the exceptions to the rules, Black-tailed Godwit vs Bar-tailed Godwit for a timely example.

The simplicity of the rules isn't as helpful when reading them, as you can't know if the name it represents was one, two, three or four words, or one of the several exceptions.
