Observation start time: 08:30:00 Observation end time: 13:45:00 Total observation time: 4 hours
Official Counter: Jerry McWilliams
Observers: Jerry McWilliams, Ken Felix
Visitors: Ken Felix assisted with the count in the afternoon and Mark Lethaby stopped by to show us a spotless Spotted Salamander and a Jefferson's Salamander.
Weather: A mix of weather with snow in the morning then rain, then back to snow. Occasional peeks of sun with a cold SW to WSW wind.
Raptor Observations: Few hawks were cutting through the wintery conditions, but it didn't stop vultures that passed through in unexpected good numbers. Over 400 vultures were in the air at one time at the 1000 hour bird time ahead of a storm. I took a short hour or so break during the passage of a rain storm.
Non-raptor Observations: Quite a surprise was a Horned Grebe that made several passes high over the hawk watch then attempted to land on the amusement park parking lot before heading back out over the lake. Either this bird or another came back later and repeated the same flight. Other birds on the move include; many blackbirds, Canada Goose-10, Red-breasted Merganser-32, Bonaparte's Gull-63, Common Loon-15, Great Blue Heron-1,American Crow-30, Double-crested Cormorant-62
Predictions: Mostly sunny and colder than today with NW wind. A flight along the lake not likely.
