This is a query in response to Jason’s observations of the cowbird/blackbird interactions. I wonder if there’s any research on this type of interactive behavior between species competitors? Could the cowbirds be engaging with the blackbirds as a strategy to somehow make subsequent nest predation easier? Could close contact of the described preening somehow reduce the blackbirds’ wariness of the cowbirds (through smell?)
I’d be interested in any more knowledgeable thoughts about this!
