Subject: [obol] Pale-billed Common Loon - Yaquina Bay
Here's a photo of a loon that was off the Newport Public Fishing Pier this
morning. The bill is thick and pale, and seems to be angled like a
Yellow-billed loon might have. But it isn't holding it's bill up, and the
body has its highest point well forward, like a Common Loon. I understand
from Lars Jonsson's Birds of Europe, that a Common Loon in late winter,
before the transition to summer plumage, "can look almost wholly whitish on
the bill-tip, which combined with the then paler and worn neck markings
produces a risk of confusion with the White-billed diver" (Yellow-billed
