Here's a photo of a loon that was off the Newport Public Fishing Pier this morning. The bill is thick and pale, and seems to be angled like a Yellow-billed loon might have. But it isn't holding it's bill up, and the body has its highest point well forward, like a Common Loon. I understand from Lars Jonsson's Birds of Europe, that a Common Loon in late winter, before the transition to summer plumage, "can look almost wholly whitish on the bill-tip, which combined with the then paler and worn neck markings produces a risk of confusion with the White-billed diver" (Yellow-billed Loon).
