Eighteen birders were on the Northern Virginia Bird Club's walk at Huntley Meadows this morning, led by Tom Nardone and Dixie Sommers. The birding varied from rather quiet to quite busy, and the weather went from mid-forties and cloudy to above 50 and clearing.
Highlights were at least 31 Rusty Blackbirds moving around in trees on the wetland edge, two early Tree Swallows swooping over the wetland, and a Brown Thrasher seen in the woods past the observation tower. The usual Red-headed Woodpecker also put in an appearance. Waterfowl numbers and variety are down from earlier this year, but we had nice views of Gadwall, Northern Shovelers, Hooded Mergansers, and Pied-billed Grebes.
