Subject: [Va-bird] Burke Lake, again
The Red-necked Grebe was there Tuesday morning in the same general area reported by Gerry (issue 27). It may have been reported before but there is a Great Blue Heron rookery on the small island across the lake from the fishing pier. Approximately half of the nests were “claimed” by an adult heron. It seems odd to see such a large bird on so small a nest. Another highlight was several pairs of Eastern Bluebirds checking out what appears to be a new bluebird nesting box near the SE end of the dam; no activity around the boxes at the other end of the dam. Large numbers of Double-crested Cormorants, Ring-billed Gulls and Canada Geese together with several Bufflehead pairs and a single Greater Scaup male.
