Today Dave Tickner and I found the red-throated loon that
Jim Flynn reported
at the Lake Blue Ridge Marina and Tom Striker relocated
yesterday. Both yesterday and today it was seen from the
viewing platform and seem to prefer snorkeling and diving
fairly close to shore. It was very obvious to tell the difference
from the 3 or 4 common loons with the whiter skinny neck, upturned bill, and smaller partially submerged body.
Also seen were 5 horned grebes, 11 Bonaparte’s gulls,
pied bill grebes, ring-billed gulls, and an adult bald eagle.
It was well worth standing in the misty cold rain and wind
to see the red-throated loon.
