In response to Fran’s note regarding the Great Backyard Bird Count, I invite anyone and everyone to join us at Maclay Gardens State Park this Saturday morning from 6 to 9 am for the GBBC. The Park has a variety of habitat, fronting on Lake Hall and surrounding Lake Overstreet, together with miles of wooded trails that presently are bursting with early morning song..

It’ll be a nice way to begin the day before moving on along to the always-rewarding Apalachee Audubon Yard Tours!

If you have any questions you may email me off-list or visit the Maclay Gardens SP web site (www.floridastateparks.org/park-events/Maclay-Gardens <http://www.floridastateparks.org/park-events/Maclay-Gardens> ) for more information.

Apologies for bombarding you with 3 announcements in a row, but there's no excuse not to get out and enjoy the weather and birds this weekend!

Great Backyard Bird Count, 2018

http://gbbc.birdcount.org

The 21st annual Great Backyard Bird Count takes place Feb. 16-19, 2018. This event, now global, provides a "winter snapshot" of distribution of birds. Participants observe and count the birds at a given location and enter the results at http://www.birdcount.org. The counts can be conducted anywhere--yards, parks, trails, etc.--though a separate checklist must be made for each location. During the weekend, the online data is updated many times a day, and you can keep up with what birds are being reported where (click on "Explore Data"). In 2017 an estimated 240,418 bird watchers from more than 100 countries submitted 181,606 bird checklists reporting 6,259 species–more than half the known bird species in the world. Another part of the event is the GBBC Photo Contest. Check out the Photo Gallery on the web site for past photos and winners and submit your great photos for this year's count.

The GBBC coincides with the annual Apalachee Audubon Wildlife-Friendly Yards Tour. Some of our hosts may be keeping yard tallies for the day to submit later. You can help by pointing out any birds you see that are not already on the list. The GBBC is a joint project of the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology with Canadian partner Bird Studies Canada.. It also receives support from Wild Birds Unlimited.
