On pilings downstream from the former police department riding shelter--between the Broadway & Fremont Bridges--a half-leucistic DCCO was sunning its outstretched wings. From the breast ventrally and the clavicles dorsally, the head end was entirely white with darkish flecking. It was much paler than a 1st or 2nd year bird; from the breast and shoulders back, it was a normal black, It almost looked dipped in 'whitewash,' but I can't imagine how that would be possible.

Max Planck is supposed to have said: A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.Andreas Wagner observed of Planck's remark: Science, like nature, advances one funeral at a time.
