The second annual Mega Bowl of Birding in New Haven County was held today.
28 people participated, comprising seven teams. The CT Young Birders Club
"Darth Waders" were victorious again, finding the most species and accruing
the most points of any team. As with last year, it was a close contest and a
good time was had by all. The seven groups saw an aggregate total of 102
species, with notable sightings including: Snow Goose, Ross' Goose,
Harlequin Duck, Wood Duck, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, White-winged
Scoter, Barrow's Goldeneye, Rough-legged Hawk, American Coot, Black-bellied
Plover, Purple Sandpiper, Iceland Gull, Snowy Owl, Pileated Woodpecker,
Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Gray Catbird, Lapland Longspur, Snow Bunting,
White-crowned Sparrow, and Rusty Blackbird. All of the participants deserve
a lot of credit for going out on a cold mid-winter's day and seeing all of
the birds that they did. We'll be out there again next year!
