Subject: [LABIRD-L] Creole CBC summary

On 5 January, the last day of the Christmas Bird Count season, 14 participants in 5 parties helped with the 33rd Creole CBC. This is really a fantastic count, and for its relatively low number of parties typically generates one of the higher species counts among LA CBCs. This year we ended up with (unofficially still) 143 species, plus 6 count-week species. This is a little better than the post-Rita average.

The bold-faced count-day species included: Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (4th record), Greater Scaup (7th record), Least Bittern (2nd record), Swainson's Hawk (3rd record), Red-tailed "Harlan's" Hawk (1st record), American Crow (1st record), Wood Thrush (5th record), Lark Sparrow (1st record), Harris's Sparrow (2nd record), Indigo Bunting (8th record), and Yellow-headed Blackbird (1st record).

Bold-faced count-week species included: Yellow-throated Warbler, Clay-colored Sparrow, and Grasshopper Sparrow.

Record high counts included Anhinga (14), White-winged Dove (186), and Gray Catbird (20).

Happy birding,
