Subject: [SFBirds] Herring spawn mission rock/McCovey Cove
The Herring are still running hard for their 3rd night. The upcoming low tides are in the afternoons, 11-3pm range. These lower tides will expose new herring roe and could create the type of gull feeding frenzy birders wait for. The gull action quickly subsides on the higher tides as the artificially constrained bay shore fills in quickly, covering the roe in the intertidal areas.
Made a quick stop at the ocean this afternoon, with the huge swells and wind it was wild out there. Nearly 200 scoters by mile rock, every one a surf. Hundreds of gulls and murres but could not pick out any murrelets.
