Subject: 2017 Stone Mountain CBC Results
The 25th Stone Mountain CBC was done on 12/31/2017 by 7 participants in
3 parties.

For the 4th year out of the last 7, a massive flock of several thousand
grackles was observed, feeding on the leftovers of a recently harvested
corn field. Including the 10,000 estimated grackles, a total of 12,357
birds of 60 species were counted. Even though it was not a particularly
birdy day and there were no real surprises, we were well above our
averages of about 2100 birds(not including grackles) and 55 species.

One very conspicuously almost missing bird was golden crowned-kinglets,
of which the total of 2 was a record low for the count. Several other
species of songbirds were at very low levels while crows and juncoes
were near historic highs. Certainly seemed like the cold winter had
pushed a lot of birds further south than usual. See species counts and
