During the peak of high tide in the estuary around 10:30 this morning, at least 3 Nelson's sparrows were observed by multiple birders about 4/5 of the way south along the McCoy trail south from the Tijuana Estuary visitor center. At least 3 and up to 5 large-billed savannah sparrows were also seen along the trail.
A reddish egret was present south of the bayshore bike path between 7th St and the Strand Hwy in Imperial Beach a little later.
Around 12:30, the Nazca booby was seen on the base of a buoy well out on the bay to the east-southeast of Attu Rd on the strand.
On the premise that negative reports are useful as well, we did not find the tricolored heron or long-tailed duck when checking along the bayshore bike path from the observation platform east of 8th St to the Strand Hwy. No black scoters were seen scoping from Grand Caribe in Coronado Cays. And from 8:20 to 10:00, no dusky-capped flycatcher nor red-throated pipit were found at Berry Park along Leon St in Nestor. However, Elizabeth Copper may have heard the flycatcher briefly on private property to the south of the park, had the continuing yellow warbler there, and an oriole was heard chattering but not seen. Flocks of pipits passed over the park from east to southeast heading into the Tijuana River Valley (the presence of a merlin enjoying breakfast possibly deterred them from dropping in).
