Subject: Nerw River waterfowl, owls & other raptors
Yesterday afternoon, we drove along New River from the mouth of the
Bluestone River to Sandstone Falls(Summers & Raleigh Counties). Bluestone
Lake was frozen and sections of the river near Brooks were iced over.
We ended the day with 48 species including
Canada Goose 373
Mallard 179
Amer. black Duck 79
N. Pintail 4
Bufflehead 2
Hooded Merganser 71
Common Merganser 100
Great Blue Heron 5
Ring-billed Gull 6
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Bald Eagle 4(all immatures)
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
Red-tailed Hawk 2
When we pulled into our driveway, we had a screech owl looking out of one
of our nest boxes. While checking out the full moon early this morning, we
had 2 Great Horned Owls calling as well as a coyote.
Ain't life grand in the country!
