Happy New Year, Texbirders!
The First Day Bird Walk at Santa Ana brought more birds than people,
perhaps no surprise given that it was 35 degrees outside when we started
and it went up a whopping 2 degrees while we were out. Waterfowl was
plentiful and not bothered by the weather at all. Small flocking birds were
heard often and seen sometimes. It was fun to share several Rio Grande
Valley specialties with a college class down from Oklahoma City, including
Common Pauraque, White-tipped and Inca Doves, Green Jays, Great Kiskadees,
Green Kingfisher and Plain Chachalacas, even before crossing over the levee
onto the refuge trails. The most surprising find was four Pine Siskins out
near Willow Lake 3.
There will not be a bird walk tomorrow (Tuesday) due to a volunteer meeting
but starting on Wednesday, January 3, bird walks will happen every day of
the week except Sunday. Meet at the Santa Ana Visitor Center by 8:30 to
join in the fun.
