Subject: [cobirds] Photographic Big Year 2017
Well, the year is coming to an end. For most of us, we start all over again and set new goals to motivate ourselves to get back out in the field. This past year, a few of good friends (David Starbuck, Art Hudak, and Darien Obrien---a.k.a the Party Train) and I decided to set a goal of not only seeing 500 ABA species, but also getting photo evidence of each one. I must say it was more difficult than I expected. We ended up spending more time in the field, attempting to get the photo documentation. There were times when we saw the bird and struck out because it vanished before getting the camera up. What it did do was to get a group of working guys together, going on trips and enjoying the best hobby in the world, while sharing laughs until our guts hurt, and seeing amazing, beautiful areas in our state and beyond. Indisputably, the best part was the camaraderie that we shared not only on our Sunday day trips, but on the trips out of town. In the end, we were able to see and photograph 525 amazing ABA species(Last bird of the year was a Whiskered Screech Owl on the 31st), which never would have happened without our first of the year challenge. As we venture into a new year, I encourage you to try a group challenge. At the end of the year, you are rewarded with amazing memories that will last a lifetime!!! If you have time, take a look at our gallery that has all 525 species photos: https://partytrain.smugmug.com/
