Subject: [ALBIRDS] Water birds along River Road
Took River Road back from Muscle Shoals this afternoon. Ended up making four stops to watch birds. Highlights of the drive included Ross's Geese (12 at Bainbridge Pond, 9 at Town Creek Marsh), Snow Geese (2 at Bainbridge Pond, 71 at Town Creek Marsh), Lesser (5000 at The Point) and Greater (1000 at The Point) Scaup and Wilson's Snipe (83 at Donegon Slough, 26 at Town Creek Marsh). There were huge numbers of ducks at The Point. A hunter was setting up at a blind on the river side of Hog Island (submerged) and must not have liked the fact the ducks were closer to shore and not near his blind. He made a boat run through the middle of the flock then returned to his blind. About half the ducks headed east. The others circled around then returned to their original location. Guess they knew where the blind was located. Most were Scaup, but I did pick out a few others from the group that returned. Included were 2 Mallard, 3 Pintail, 3 Canvasback, 14 Redhead, 16 Bufflehead, 1 Goldeneye and 2 Ruddy Ducks. I also counted 86 Horned Grebes there.
