Subject: Southern Lake Norman CBC

The Southern Lake Norman CBC was held Sunday 12/17. Thirty-one field observers in 10 parties started before dawn and ended after dusk. Thank you to everyone who participated.
It looks like the final species count will be 96, about the 26-year average. Highlights include canvasback, redhead, great egret (new to count), barn owl, osprey, merlin, blue-headed vireo, marsh wren (2nd count record), and gray catbird. Unfortunate misses were American wigeon, wild turkey, Northern bobwhite, Northern harrier, loggerhead shrike, common raven, vesper sparrow, white-crowned sparrow. No purple finches or pine siskins reported.
Thanks to Chris Talkington, John Scavetto, Dennis Kent, and Kevin Metcalf for braving the cold to check the lake by boat in the AM and PM.
And special THANKS to Marsha Wright for hosting the great tally up dinner.
