Subject: American Kestrel with large prey
Today at work I heard a bird in agony and saw our winter resident American
Kestrel flying away with a dark bird that was about 3/4 its own size. The
kestrel was struggling to stay airborne but managed to make it to a high
snag where it plucked feathers for a bit and then flew off. I never did
identify the prey, but suffice it to say I had never seen a kestrel with
such a large catch! By the way, the kestrel is roosting at night up under
the eaves of one of our buildings.
