Subject: [MBBIRDS] Santa Cruz CBC Preliminary Results

The preliminary count total for the Santa Cruz CBC is 168 species (count day).  158 species were seen from the count's compiled list.  An additional 10 "off-list" species were observed, bring the total (preliminary) count for the day to 168.  This count places the ten-year average at 169.

The lowest counts during this past ten year period were 161 in 2010 and 163 in 2012.  The highest count of this past ten year period is 178 in 2009.

Count day participation this year reached 88 by last preliminary count.  Comparing species and participation counts over the last five years are: 168:88 (2017; preliminary data), 171:75 (1916), 169:74 (2015), 165:84 (2014), 174:80 (2013).
The "off-list" specie highlights of the count are as follows.  I'll leave it to the section leaders or observers to post location / sighting details.

Greater White-fronted Goose - stakeout bird (prior reports)Snow Goose - stakeout bird (prior reports) Dark Shearwater species - Terrace PointBald Eagle - Loch Lomond and DeLaveaga Park - possible three individualsPacific Golden Plover - Wilder BeachParasitic Jaeger - Wilder Coast sectionCassin's Auklet - Stockton Point, Westcliff DriveLong-eared Owl - Rodeo Gulch areaTree Swallow - Wilder Coast section and Westside sectionBarn Swallow - Wilder Coast section
Without looking at records, the two known count week birds not on list (13th-19th), of which I am aware, is Black-and-White Warbler (Bethany Curve Park) and Black-throated Gray Warbler (Oceanview Park).
Common species "on-list" and missed include:
Marbled GodwitWilletForster's tern (now becoming uncommon for this list)
Uncommon species "on-list" and missed include:Northern PintailGreen-winged Teal
White-winged ScoterBlack ScoterBlack-vented Shearwater
Common Gallinule
Red PhalaropePomarine JaegerMarbled MurreletBurrowing OwlWhite-breasted NuthatchAmerican Dipper
Red Crossbill

Any reports of these species within count circle and during the remaining count week (through 19th) are appreciated.  I may have already received such reports, at the time of this writing; please continue to provide reports.

These preliminary results, being close to par for count, are amazing considering the count conditions faces count day. The wind conditions encountered were not in favor of the count. Species abundances are expected to be way down, based upon observations; some sections had species diversity impacted as well.     All the best (birding),
Eric Feuss (Santa Cruz CBC Compiler, Soquel)

I like to take a quick moment to thank all the people who helped organize this count and the associated count-down potluck.  Nickie Zavinsky for all the logistics and hospitality for count down dinner; Nordie Feuss and Soquel Glen Mobile Home Park for the facilities for count down dinner.  All “dish bringers” for the time and effort associated with great food provided; I think the dishes this year brought the count-down potluck to all time high; an amazing spread!  --
