Comments: Weather: first half hour, calm, overcast, 41 F. Then light drizzle, developing into steady light rain for last hour. Started at Marquette Park Beach concession stand; not much action, so walked west past Lake Street parking area to breakwater at USX Steel impoundment, west end of Miller Beach. Spent most time watching scoters, sanderlings, etc. there. Returned to Marquette Park.

SURF SCOTER 6 juveniles in group at breakwater, diving for molluscs (handling them above water), preening. Studied in scope at 200 yards, photos. All dark body; no white in wing (wings spread when flapping on water, partly spread in diving). Triangular bill. Two bright white spots, behind eye and between eye and bill (the forward spot being vertical, not horizontal); contrasting black crown. Pale bellies (thus juvenile)
BLACK SCOTER 1 with juvenile surf scoters, diving for molluscs by breakwater. Smaller than Surfs, bill like "normal duck" (e.g., dabbler), pale brown cheek contrasts with dark crown.

SNOWY OWL 1 perched on top of breakwater wall from 2:00 to 2:10 pm, near small chain link fenced enclosure. Apparent juvenile male: large white bib on chin, throat; nape white; crown mostly white with thin gray bar. Underparts below bib (breast) heavily barred black and white. Photos (dim, through drizzle at 200-300 yards), will upload later. Bird disappeared while I was not looking.

Comments: Studied gulls on beach at parking lot. Then walked sidewalk to catwalk and lighthouse. Did lakewatch from far side of lighthouse, observing outer breakwater and Lake Michigan, 7:15 to 9:00. Weather: 43 F, overcast, gradually becoming partly sunny. Calm.

RED-NECKED GREBE 1 adult in winter plumage, preening, diving, across impoundment from parking area, by outer long rocky breakwall. Continuing bird, last few days (which I did not learn till later). At times alone, at other times with a few RB Mergansers, 2 Horned Grebes, three gull species. Long neck, quite reddish on sides. Throat, chest white. Dark black crown, gray back (almost as dark as crown). Yellow bill, straight. Large pale "ear" mark. Holds neck erect. Some white in wing as it preens.
